Because this is the ONE HABIT I've been wanting to pick up for years and it was only fairly recent that I managed to do it and said goodbye to ol'sickly me.
Just like everything in life, even something as simple as drinking water also has techniques and here I will reveal what are the unconscious things you can do to increase your water intake. Prepare to be mindblown!
But first things first...
How much should you drink in a day? So there's the standard 8 glasses of water. But really my argument here will be how do you measure 8 glasses? small glass? big glass? in US they measure water by oz and every where else measures in ml. May be the glasses in US is bigger. And who the hell came up with such vague measurements, and do we not take body sizes/gender/etc... into account?
So one day I was talking to a friend and he shared a formula that immediately answered my above arguments. Or may be cause I'm a math grad so I believe in formulas.
And the formula to the amount of water you need to drink is:
Weight (kg) / 22 = daily drink amount (ml)
So how does this work?
Let's say if you're 50 kg so, 50 kg / 22 = 2.2 litres per day
Or for every 22kg, you need to drink 1 litre.
There are some formulas out there saying you'll need to multiply with your age etc... but I don't really buy it cause I realise older people should drink less and not more and plus I'd like to keep things simple so this formula works perfect for me.
And as important as water is to the body, it's also equally important to not overdose in water drinking, because there are some drawbacks to over-drinking.
Now moving on to techniques to ensure you hit that number.
The Right Bottle
Hunting for the right bottle is the first step to hitting your numbers. Seems ridiculous right? Yea, I thought so too but 90% of the time I drink the amount I need to BECAUSE of the bottle.
It's not just a bottle, it's THE BOTTLE.
#Tip: Get as hassle free to drink as possible. Driving a lot? Straw won't spill. Hard to unscrew a bottle cap? Get the one with a push button.
So, after trying out bottles with different measurements, I found out that the sweet spot is at 2 litres.
Anything less than 2 litres, you'd be tired of re-filling it, and you most probably think you drank a lot because you have been re-filling it constantly.
Anything more than 2 litres feels like you're lugging a fish tank with you wherever you go. And you would feel that no matter how much you drink, you'll never finish the bottle.
Next, do you get a bottle with a straw, the bottle that you squeeze, the sippy bottle? the bottle that you chug water down?
And after many trials and error, I've discovered that you unconsciously drink more water with a straw bottle.
Notice how you easily finish the drinks with straw on it? Cause sipping is faster than having a mouthful of water and then swallowing it down. The mouthful of water trick your brain into thinking that you a drink a lot, but did you really?
When to drink?
One universal unsaid belief that people all around have is, it is the best to drink once you wake up. I'm not sure how true this is but I think it's a great way to start. After a night of sleep, I dont know bout you but I do wake up thirsty.
Honestly I've discovered that I usually drink the most is when someone is talking. They talk and talk, I drink. Also it helps me with listening. Then again may be everyone is different. So notice when do you usually drink most? Is it when you're sitting on a train, when you're watching tv or playing games? Notice when do you drink more and when do you drink less and slowly make changes.
With that said, bring your bottle EVERYWHERE! Not only it ensures that you'll be drinking, it also throws you off from ordering drinks unnecessarily!
Flavour your water
Because I'm fabulous so my water should be fabulous and not boring. For those who are unable to drink water because water is tasteless, there is a way out.
You can try infusing your water with different fruits or vegetables
You can steep tealeaves to give it a bit of a taste
Healthy and delicious, if you have the time to prep.
This can be a person or this can be a group of people. Or even yourself with a whiteboard/paper and every day before you go to bed record or announce the amount of water you managed to drink for the day.
The good thing with having a group of people/partner is that when you see them drinking and updating, it keeps yourself in check. If instagram posts can cause cravings, an update can keep you drinking too.
1. Calculate the amount of water you need to drink
2. Find the right bottle size, for me and a few others it's 2L may be you want to find out yours by yourself or you can stick to the results of my trial and error? up to you.
3. Get a bottle with a straw
4. Bring your bottle EVERYWHERE
5. Flavour your water (healthily)
6. Get an accountability partner
So that's it, if you're like me, who is having problems with drinking water and still unable to drink a much as you should I hope the above tips helps.
Stay healthy and happy drinking !
